Investment Idea Sharing for July 26, 2013

This Week's Activity – July 26, 2013:
This week, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index dropped 450 points, ending on July 26 at 14,130 down from 14,589 last week.  The Dow ended at 15,558 up from 15,543 last week, near the all time high of 15,604 on July 23, but has been pretty flat since July 10 and may be running out of enough good news to drive it any higher.

I am not counting on the world markets to keep going up and am still planning for a drop soon.  While I wait, I continue to look for companies with good fundamental financial values that are near their 52 week lows.

StockEvaluator “Short List” shows only companies that are within 5% of their 52 week low AND have less than 5 Red cells.  This week only 11 companies are on the short list.  None of them look good to me.  Two are from China (ZA, ZX) and one from India (SLT) these three have low red cell counts, but I am reluctant to buy small Chinese or Indian companies due to my lack of faith in their accounting and reporting.
MutualFundEvaluator “Short List” shows funds that are within 3% of their 52 week low AND have less than 3 Red cells.  This week’s list has 27 funds.  They are all Bond funds, which are continuing to go down in anticipation of The FED raising interest rates.  I am continuing to wait on any bond fund buys in hopes they can go even lower.

“Volatility” sort shows only companies that have: Average Daily Price Volatility >3% ;
Within 10% of their 52 week low ; Less than 6 Red cells ; Profit >0% and Dividend >1%.  This week’s list has only 2 companies.  Neither of them look good to me this week.

Investment Idea Sharing for July 20, 2013

This Week's Activity – July 20, 2013:
This week, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index continued its recovery, ending on July 19 at 14,589 up from 14,506 last week, but still down from 15,381 on Monday May 20.  This is now only a 5.2% drop in 9 weeks.  This week, the Dow ended at 15,543, up from 15,464 last week, now at a new all time closing high.  So, there is no obvious drop or correction going on here.  The market is still hoping Mr. Bernanke and The FED will keep the easy money policy and low interest rates going.  I am continuing to look for companies with good fundamental financial values that are near their 52 week lows.

The FED is continuing to do Quantitative Easing (QE) to hold interest rates low until unemployment gets to about 6.5% from the current level of about 7.6%.  Here is a good Wikipedia article about how Quantitative Easing works http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitative_easing.

Even though the FED is continuing QE and also holding the Prime Rate at 3.25%, the 30-year Fixed Rate Mortgage rate has gone from 3.35% in Dec. 2012 to 4.07% in June 2013.  This means that regular people are paying higher interest rates to buy a house even though the big banks can still borrow at Prime. So, even though the FED is not raising rates, the overall market IS raising rates to you and me.  I think this is a good sign and should help to lessen the shock waves that will happen in the stock market when the FED finally does raise the Prime rate and stop the Quantitative Easing (QE) buying of Treasury Bonds. See weblinks to historical values for both of these rates at the Ultimate StockFinder “Links” page http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/websearchlinksindex.html

StockEvaluator “Short List” shows only companies that are within 5% of their 52 week low AND have less than 5 Red cells.  This week only 9 companies are on the short list.  None of them look good to me.  The two biggest in terms of sales revenue are PBF and RWE.DE.  PBF has very high Debt to Equity at 221%.  RWE.DE has Balance Sheet values on Yahoo Finance that only go up to year 2009, so these values are too old to use for making any buy decision.  The four Closed End Bond Funds are down because the market is already driving bond prices down in anticipation of the FED starting to raise interest rates sooner rather than later.
MutualFundEvaluator “Short List” shows funds that are within 3% of their 52 week low AND have less than 3 Red cells.  This week’s list has 25 funds.  They are all Bond funds, which are continuing to go down in anticipation of The FED raising interest rates.  I am continuing to wait on any bond fund buys in hopes they can go even lower.

“Volatility” sort shows only companies that have: Average Daily Price Volatility >3% ;
Within 10% of their 52 week low ; Less than 6 Red cells ; Profit >0% and Dividend >1%.  This week’s list has only 3 companies.  None of them look good to me this week.

Investment Idea Sharing for July 13, 2013

This Week's Activity – July 13, 2013:
This week, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index continued its recovery, ending on July 12 at 14,506 up from 13,309 last week, but still down from 15,381 on Monday May 20.  This is now only a 5.7% drop in 8 weeks.  This week, the Dow ended at 15,464, up from 15,135 last week, now at a new all time closing high.  So, there is no obvious drop or correction going on here.     The market is hoping Mr. Bernanke and The FED will keep the easy money policy and low interest rates going.  Mr. Bernanke reiterated this week that he is NOT going to raise the Prime Rate, so Wall Street continued going higher on this good news.  But, the clock is ticking pretty loudly for that money train to stop, we just do not know when it actually will.  I am continuing to look for companies with good fundamental financial values that are near their 52 week lows.

Even though The FED is holding the Prime Rate at 3.25%, the 30-year Fixed Rate Mortgage rate has gone from 3.35% in Dec. 2012 to 4.07% in June 2013.  This means that regular people are paying higher interest rates to buy a house even though the big banks can still borrow at Prime.  I have added weblinks to historical values for both of these rates at the Ultimate StockFinder “Links” page http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/websearchlinksindex.html

Update on my “Volatility” buy of HXM, a Mexican homebuilder.  I bought them on July 8 at $3.00 and sold them on July 11 at $3.50 for a 16% gain.  I have another buy order in for HXM at $3.00 to see if I can do this same trade again next week.  Their average daily volatility over the past 14 days is 7%.  They showed up on the StockEvaluator “Volatility” sort which is available from the “Stock Evaluator” webpage http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/stockevaluatorindex.html  under the heading  “Download Pre-Sorted Views of Stock Evaluator for Quick Analysis”.
This “Volatility” sort shows only companies that have:
                              Average Daily Price Volatility >3%

                              Less than 6 Red cells

Investment Idea Sharing for July 6, 2013

This Week's Activity – July 6, 2013:
Our next meeting is this Tuesday, July 9 at 7:30PM at my house.

This week, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index continued its recovery, ending on July 5 at 14,309 up from 13,677 last week, but still down from being at 15,381 on Monday May 20.  This is now only a 7% drop in 7 weeks.  This week, the Dow ended at 15,135, up from 14,909 last week, still down from 15,391 on May 20, but now only a 1.7% drop.  So, there is no obvious drop or correction of any magnitude going on here.  I am continuing to look for companies with good fundamental financial values that are near their 52 week lows.

At the “Links” page on UltimateStockfinder.com you can view Commodity Prices from an excellent CNN webpage http://money.cnn.com/data/commodities/   This page has today’s prices for oil, metals, grains, livestock and consumer items.  Notice that Metals (gold, silver, platinum, copper) are all at 52 week lows, along with Agriculture (corn, soybeans and wheat) also at 52 week lows.  But, Oil is at 52 week HIGHs.

I think the high oil prices are helping to keep oil company prices up and as a result, RDS-A is not dropping enough for me to sell my PUT option.  So I cancelled this PUT order and replaced it with a Jan2014 $27 PUT on FCX (Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold) at a limit price of $3.20 which will give me a 12% PUT option return.  FCX pays a 4.3% dividend and goes ex-dividend on July 11, 2013.  I noticed that each time FCX goes ex-dividend, the stock price drops by $.30 to $.50 which is about the same as the quarterlydividend amount.  I am hoping this drop will happen on July 11 and help me to sell this PUT option.

Also, I am trying a “Volatility” buy using HXM, a Mexican homebuilder.  They showed up on the
StockEvaluator “Volatility” sort that is available from the “Stock Evaluator” webpage http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/stockevaluatorindex.html at “Download Pre-Sorted Views of Stock Evaluator for Quick Analysis”.
This “Volatility” sort shows only companies that have:
                              Average Daily Price Volatility >3%
Within 10% of their 52 week low
                              Less than 6 Red cells
                              Profit >0% and Dividend >1%.

Next Monthly Meeting 2nd Tuesday of every Month:
Tuesday, July 9, 2013 , 7:30 PM at my house.

Here are my Stock BUYs for Last Week:
Buy   Company   Buy
Date  Bought     Price    Target Sell

No buys

Here are my Stock SELLs for Last Week:
Sell   Company   Sell     Buy       Buy
Date    Sold        Price   Price     Date

I only do Covered CALLs or Cash Secured PUTs
Option  Sell    Stock    Strike   Expiration   Option

------  ------  --------  ------  ----------  --------
CALL     7/5     NOK     $4.50    Jan 2014   $0.40
I bought NOK on 5/4/2012 for $3.23
