 This Week's Activity – April 26, 2014:
One of my friends has inherited some money and wants to put half of it with a fee based money manager, and try managing the other half by himself using mutual funds.  So I made up a new ‘Short List’ screener in Mutual Fund Evaluator.xls to find excellent long term buy and hold mutual funds that he can consider.  Here are the criteria and limits that I am using:

Note that this screen is set to <16% Above 52 Week Low instead of the <5% above 52 Week Low that I usually do.  This is because I want to deliver more good funds for consideration.  This screen returns both stock and bond funds, and is based purely on fund performance and fees.  With the settings shown above, this ‘Short List’ screen returns about 80 Mutual Funds.  This provides my friend with a starting list of excellent funds.  Then he can tighten the screening criteria to find a few good funds that fit his exact investment preferences.  “Fund Manager” name is in Column D so my friend can look for the stock brokerage he is planning to use and see if they have any funds good enough to make it on this list.  If not, then I will show him how to check the funds list at his brokerage’s website to see if they have agreements with certain fund managers to sell specific funds for No-Load and No Fees.

This ‘Short List’ will deliver good funds for long term ‘Buy and Hold’ investing.  The only decision left is to decide if he wants to wait for a market drop before buying into one of these good funds.  Download ‘Short List’ from the Ultimate Stock finder website: http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/mutualfundevaluator_short_list.xls

This week, the world market indices were mixed with minor Up / Down movements except for the Russian Index which was down 5%.  Here is an article discussing the increase in tensions in Ukraine and Russia:

I still think the markets are overpriced but I continue to look for good values on individual stocks of good solid companies.

Investment Idea Sharing April 21, 2014

This Week's Activity – April 19, 2014:
This week my FinViz stock screener when set to my ‘Short List’ limits is returning two contract oil drillers, NE and RIG.  My Stock Evaluator.xls spreadsheet ‘Short List’ is NOT returning these two drillers because their Enterprise Value / Revenue (E.V./Rev) is a little above my upper limit of 1.5, and their Enterprise Value / EBITDA is slightly above my limit of 6.5.  FinViz does not provide E.V./ Rev. or E.V./EBITDA as a screening criteria, but they do have most of the rest of my ‘Short List’ screening criteria, so I like to use FinViz as a quick check on how well my ‘Short List’ is working each week.

Since NE and RIG are so close to my screening limits, I did more research and I like them.  The entire contract oil drilling segment is down due to fears that the price of oil will drop and cause them to lose revenue and profits.  But, several of these drillers have very good dividend coverage (<50% payout ratios) and have low Debt to Equity and low Goodwill.  So, I like their fundamentals.  The PUT options for NE and RIG are both paying about 10% for a Jan 2015 ‘At the Money’ PUT.  I like NE better because their 1 year revenue growth is 20% v.s. RIG at 0% and NE has a 25% Dividend Payout ration v.s. RIG at 43%.  I have placed a PUT Sell order for the NE Jan 2015 PUT at the $30 strike price for a price $3.30 / share.

Here is the FinViz screener link:

Here is a Stock Evaluator.xls spreadsheet view with NE and RIG sorted to the top along with all their other contract drillers so you can wee why I like these 2 the best:

Here is a good article discussing the overall contract oil driller market and focusing on ESV, which does not look nearly as good to me as NE and RIG:

Here is a Motley Fool article on NE:

Here is a Seeking Alpha article on NE:

Investment Idea Sharing April 12, 2014

This Week's Activity – April 12, 2014:
As a fundamental value investor, my number one goal is to find places to put my money so it will be working for me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  This means that on any day when I DON’T want to work, my money is still working for me.  I view each of my dollars as one of my employees, and I want each of my employees to bring in $.05 per year, even when I am not watching them.  Stocks that pay dividends and bonds that pay interest are the kind of employees that I like.

At the “Ratios” worksheet in my Investment_tracker_sample.xls spreadsheet (download it here: http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/investment_tracker_example.xls ) you can see a list of the various dividends and interest your investments are paying and how much money you have invested at each % break point.  My current investment break down is:
   Dividend/         % of My
   Interest %      Total Portfolio
    >1%                 41%
    >2%                 36%
    >3%                 33%
    >4%                 26%
    >5%                   9%
    >6%                   5%

I want to increase the 9% of my portfolio that is paying >5% to be 20% of my portfolio.  So, I am always looking for good solid 5% return investments.

See various historical interest rate benchmarks below so you can understand why I am happy with a 5% return.

U.S. Prime Rate: Ranged from a low of 1.75% in 1947 to a high of 21% in 1980.  Currently at 3.25%

U.S. 10 Year Treasury Note: Ranged from a low of 1.6% in 2012 to a high of 15.8% in 1981.  Currently at 2.62%

U.S. 30 Year Treasury Note: Ranged from a low of 2.7% in 2012 to a high of 15.2% in 1981.  Currently at 3.48%

U.S. 30 Year Fixed Home Mortgage rates: Ranged from a low of 3.35% in 2012 to a high of 18.4% in 1981.  Currently at 4.34%

This week, the world market indices were mixed, ranging Down from 7% (Nikkei 225) to Up 3.5% (Shang Hai SSE).  I can’t find an article explaining these Up/Down ranges for this week.  Read more here: http://news.yahoo.com/stock-futures-fall-jp-morgan-results-114655901--sector.html

Investment Idea Sharing April 5, 2014

This Week's Activity – April 5, 2014:
Remember our next monthly meeting is this Tuesday, April 8, 2014, 7:30 PM at my house.

The Yahoo Finance lookup functions for Mutual Fund Evaluator are now working again thanks to a lot of help from my friends Michael B. and Nathan.  This week’s updated Mutual Fund Evaluator is now available at www.ultimatestockfinder.com for download.  We are now using customizable Stock Market Functions that work inside an Excel spreadsheet and go to the web and strip out data values from URL’s that you can specify.  Let me know if you would like more information on how we are doing this and I will send you a short tutorial email.

My AARP magazine for April has an excellent “What I Know Now” interview with Barbara Walters where she makes several really good comments on how to live.  The one I liked best is about friends: “My friends are very important…we trust each other, we have fun, we can say anything to each other and not leave the room and worry, Why did I say that?”.
Read the interview here:

I bought RFMD in Jan. 2012 at $4.45, and this week (April 1, 2014) I sold it at $8.00 (see ‘Stock Sells’ below).  In early February, RFMD announced they were merging with TriQuint (TQNT), and my shares jumped from $5 to $7 in about 4 weeks.  Read more here: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/triquint-rfmd-merger-equals-205504969.html

Compare Fundamental Values for RFMD and TQNT against some of their powerful competitors including:  INTC, TXN, BRCM, STM, RTN, NXPI, NIPNF, IFNNY.

This week, the world market indices were mostly flat, but Russia was up 4% and Japan and China were up 2%.  I guess the market has decided that Russia’s aggressive moves in the Crimea are acceptable.  Read more here: http://seekingalpha.com/article/2127013-dow-theory-signal-questions-bullish-economic-and-market-trends

Summary Table of Worldwide Market Index Closing values for this week:

I still think the markets are overpriced but I continue to look for good values on individual stocks of good solid companies.

Last week I found a website (http://www.insiderinsights.com/free/ ) that provides a free list of the weekly top 20 Insider Buys and Sells by dollar volume for stocks traded on US markets.
I have added their link to the Ultimate Stock Finder.com “Links” page at Table of Contents Section “1. Current Stock Market Values & Metrics” http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/websearchlinksindex.html#today

At the right hand side of the “InsiderInsights Free Stuff” page, select either “Buys” or “Sells” and then click “Get top 20”.  The new window shows an excellent table containing:
Filer Name and  Title; Company Name and Ticker Symbol; Transaction Type and $ Value.
I will be checking these Top 20 Buy and Sell reports weekly to keep track of what the insiders are doing, and see what stocks I should be researching.
