Investment Idea Sharing July 26, 2014

Investment Idea Sharing - July 26, 2014:
See my wife’s stock buy this week (MCD) and my Covered Call sell (STM) below.

I will be on vacation for the next two weeks, and will not send out this newsletter and will not update the information on the website.  The next data update will be Sunday August 17.

With the American stock markets staying near all time highs, I recommend you read this article from “The Motley Fool” that was on the web in Jan. 2014.  http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/5_basic_rules_of_good_investing.html

Their 5 rules are very simple and I read them again this morning to be sure I am continuing to follow them in my investing.  For me, their Rule #5 “The Odds of Experiencing Stock Market Volatility are Exactly 100%” reminded me to re-read this article by Mark Hulbert. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/has-the-beginning-of-the-end-of-the-bull-market-begun-2014-06-25?dist=beforebell

Stock Market volatility can work in my favor if I remember to only buy good companies at 52 Week low (or longer) low prices.  When the markets are in a huge long term upswing like the past 4 years, this watching and waiting becomes ever more difficult to do.  But the other main rule for investing is “Buy Low, Sell High”.  In times like now, this really takes a lot of patience.

Last week, the world market indices were mostly flat, except for Toronto (TX60.TS) which hit a new 5 year high this week.  http://us.spindices.com/indices/equity/sp-tsx-60-index
The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and S&P 500 are still very near all time highs.

I will continue to look for stocks that have good fundamental financial values, but stock prices  near 52 week lows.

Summary Table of Worldwide Market Index Closing values for this week:

Next Monthly Meeting 2nd Tuesday of Each Month:
I need to move the August monthly meeting to the 3rd Tuesday for August only.
It will be Tuesday, August 19, 2014, 7:30 PM at my house.

Here are my Stock BUYs for This Week:
Stock Symbol: MCD
Buy Date:  7/23/2014
Buy Price:  $95 (currently pays 3.2% dividend)
Target Sell Price:  $100
Here is the 5 Year Chart for MCD:

This week, McDonald’s reported weak quarterly results.  The market punished them pretty harshly. http://wallstcheatsheet.com/business/mcdonalds-sees-weakness-after-double-dose-of-bad-news.html/?ref=YF  MCD does NOT meet hardly any of my fundamental value (Red Cell) critieria for a good buy, but my wife likes them.  She manages a portion of our total portfolio, and our deal is that she can buy whatever she wants without my approval.  She made this buy for MCD.

Investment Idea Sharing July 12, 2014

For Week Ending – July 12, 2014:
At this week’s monthly meeting, Andy, Nathan and I had an excellent discussion on several investing topics and ideas.  As a result of their comments, I have made several changes to the Stock Evaluator spreadsheet and also to the website:

  1. Stock Evaluator now contains Simple Moving Average values for 20, 50 and 200 Days (SMA20, SMA50, SMA200 are now in Columns AB, AC, AD).  I do not have target values for these, but you can use the Data-AutoFilter function (Ctrl-A) to filter these 3 columns to your own preferred limits.  This SMA data is from FinViz.com http://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=msft&ty=c&ta=1&p=d

  1. The list of my personal holdings (Symbol and % of Total Portfolio) are now posted at: http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/ultimatestockfinder_holdings_symbol.xls

  1. The list of my Sell Transactions for 2014 (Symbol, Buy Date & Price, Sell Date & Price) are posted at: http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/ultimatestockfinder_transactions.xls

  1. The “Contact Us” page now has links to UltimateStockFinder’s Twitter and YouTube sites, in addition to our Blog, Facebook and LinkedIn sites.  http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/contactusindex.html

  1. I am going to read “The Outsiders” by William Thorndike.  I hope to get it from the library.  It is on Amazon for $17.

My thanks to Andy and Nathan for all of their good ideas.

Last week, the world market indices were all down except Russia which was up slightly.  The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and S&P 500 are still very near all time highs.  Here is an article reminding us this bull market has run for a long time and we may need to re-evaluate our investing strategy and holdings because this bull will not go on forever:  http://money.msn.com/top-stocks/post--heres-the-investing-roadmap-for-the-rest-of-2014

I will continue to look for stocks that have good fundamental financial values, but stock prices  that are near 52 week lows.

Investment Idea Sharing July 5, 2014

For Week Ending – July 5, 2014:
Remember that this month’s meeting is Tuesday, July 8, 2014, 7:30 PM at my house.

This week, I have added a new macro button (Ctrl-A) which will Turn On the Data - AutoFilter function in both Stock Evaluator and Mutual Fund Evaluator.  This AutoFilter function is what I use every day to screen the thousands of rows of data and display only the stocks or funds that meet my current set of screening limits.  The Ctrl-B macro runs the ‘Short List’ screen that has my personal values Pre-Set as the screening limits.  But, now you can make your own screen by pushing the Ctrl-A button, which will turn on the AutoFilter for all column heading values in Row 24.  Then click on any down arrow in Row 24 to set your own custom screening limits for any column.  The rows of data displayed will instantly update as you change your limits.  Here is a training video showing how to set your own Custom AutoFilter screening limits:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDiNvMOurx8#t=16

Last week, the world market indices were all up except Russia which was down 1.4%.  The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and S&P 500 continued to inch up to new all time highs.  Here is an article stating that the United States is now the world’s largest producer of oil and natural gas, and how we got to be the largest: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-07-04/u-s-seen-as-biggest-oil-producer-after-overtaking-saudi.html
