Investment Idea Sharing June 28, 2014

For Week Ending – June 29, 2014:
Some of my younger investing friends (under 30) do not use Microsoft Excel due to its cost and instead are using one of the free spreadsheet programs that are almost as good as Excel.  Three of these are:  Apache OpenOffice ;  Libre Office ; Google Spreadsheet.  The problem is that when they open StockEvaluator.xls using one of these free programs, the sorting macros do not work.  This is a huge roadblock because it prevents them from fully using StockEvaluator to screen, compare and select good fundamental value stocks.

I found that Apache OpenOffice (file suffix .ods) has an easy to use “Macro Recording” capability, which helped me to quickly and easily re-create most of the StockEvaluator.xls  Microsoft Excel macros in OpenOffice.  Here is the link to download this Stock Evaluator.ods file: http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/stockevaluator_ods_master.ods
If you know someone who does not use Excel, please tell them about our new StockEvaluator for Apache OpenOffice (.ods file)

This week I added a new spreadsheet screened from StockEvaluator.xls that calculates “Average % Above 52 Week Low” for all of the stocks in each industry grouping.  It is an Ascending sort so the worst performing industries sort to the top.  Here is the link:  http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/stockevaluator_above_52_low_by_industry.xls
Currently, StockEvaluator has over 180 Industry groupings.

Last week, the world market indices were mixed with minor Up/Down movements.  The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and S&P 500 continued to inch up to new all time highs.  Here is an article discussing the 34% recovery made by the RTS (Russian) Index since hitting a 4 year low in March.  http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-24/world-s-best-stock-rally-in-russia-fed-by-putin-detente.html

I missed the fact that the RTSI had dropped so much and then recovered it all over the past 6 months.  So, to the “Summary Table of Worldwide Market Index Closing Values” (see below) that I send out each week, I have now added columns for “52 Week Hi & Low” and “% Chg.”  These columns should help me clearly see when any market index is near its 52 Week Low.  This will also trigger me to look at individual companies that are in any low index to look for buying opportunities.

(52 Week High/Low % Chg. values are the difference from This Week's closing value)

Investment Idea Sharing June 22, 2014

For Week Ending – June 22, 2014:
I routinely check on world events to see if any of them could mushroom out of control enough to cause a drop in the world stock markets.  We always seem to have these potential cataclysmic confrontations going on.  Here is my list of current world events that may trigger this drop:
1. U.S. decides to send troops back into Iraq to help with their civil war (Sunni v.s. Shiite).
2. U.S. decides to do ??? to help with Syria’s civil war (Assad v.s. all kinds of “Frenemies”).
3. U.S. and Europe decide to do ??? to help with Ukraine’s Russian separatist civil war.
4. Several Eurozone countries have elected new representatives to the European Parliament who have promised they will be voting to dismantle the Eurozone and take their respective countries off the Euro.

Looking back over the past 5 years, there were 4 major drops in the U.S. stock markets.

Here are the dates of major events that coincided with these market drops:
2010 (April 20) BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico
2011 (July to August) Greece debt crisis
2012 (April to May) Poor U.S. jobs and unemployment reports
2012 (Oct. 29) Hurricane Sandy along east coast of U.S.

Now that I see this list, I actually feel better because when trying to equate these events with stock market buy/sell decisions, only two of the events were truly natural disasters (oil spill and hurricane) that no one could have predicted.  The other two were just more of a slow reveal on the overall world debt crisis from 2008 and may not have truly caused the market drops so much as simply coincided with them.  So, even though I think the market is still headed for a drop (10 to 15%) I am the first to admit that I have no idea what will trigger it or when it will happen.  So, as always, I must continue to look for good companies that are selling too cheaply.

Last week, the world market indices were mixed with minor Up/Down movements.  The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and S&P 500 continued to inch up to new all time highs.  Here is an article discussing the Fed bond buying program that is still helping the U.S. markets:  http://www.marketwatch.com/story/stocks-rise-as-witching-may-spark-volatility-volume-2014-06-20?siteid=yhoof2

Investment Idea Sharing June 15, 2014

For Week Ending – June 15, 2014:
On Wednesday June 11, I sold a Cash Secured PUT Option on CLF, see details below.
Check out my article on how to use PUTs and CALLs:

As a fundamental value investor, I routinely check on the holdings of Warren Buffett to see if I should be buying something that he has already bought.  Here is a link to the current holdings of Buffett’s company Berkshire Hathaway:  http://www.stockpickr.com/pro/portfolio/warren-buffett/

Here is the link to a Stock Evaluator comparison of Buffett’s holdings:  http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/stockevaluator_buffett_holdings.xls
I marked each of his companies in Col. A of Stock Evaluator, then ran the Control-T sort to bring them to the top for easy comparison.  Several of his holdings have only 4 Red cells, but none of his holdings are within 5% of their 52 Week Lows.  I like to buy within 5% of 52 Week Low and prefer only 4 Red cells.  That means he owns several companies that I would want to do more research on if they go down in price to be within 5% of their 52 Week Low.
So, Warren I got my eye on you!

Last week, the world market indices were mixed with minor Up/Down movements.  The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and S&P 500 did not hit new highs this week.  Here is an article discussing how the defense sector may react to the prospects of renewed U.S. military presence in Iraq.: http://news.yahoo.com/iraq-conflict-brings-defense-stocks-focus-000323255--finance.html

CLF is down to their 5 year low due to low iron ore prices.  Their fundamental values on Stock Evaluator look good to me.  They only have 3 Red Cells.
Here is a link to a Stock Evaluator comparison of CLF v.s. their main competitors:  BHP, VALE, RIO, AAUKY   http://www.ultimatestockfinder.com/stockevaluator_clf.xls

Investment Idea Sharing June 8, 2014

For Week Ending – June 8, 2014:
You may have noticed that the last 2 weeks, I have sent out this newsletter on Monday instead of Saturday. This is because I have been getting Yahoo data look-up errors on about 30 companies for the past few months.  Yahoo was returning errors on either Stock Price or 52 Week Low on several foreign stocks ending in .L or .AX, but it was the same stocks every week. I then had to look up the data for these stocks on Yahoo and enter it into Stock Evaluator by hand.  This is pretty time consuming, so I was trying other ways to fix my automatic look-up function.  Two weeks ago, I found that if I run the look-up late on Sunday, the data all comes in correctly.  I think maybe Yahoo was updating all of their data tables in a sequential fashion over the weekend so the tables I was getting my data from for these foreign stocks must have been the last ones to get updated.

Mutual Fund Evaluator is not updated yet for last week (June 7) due to technical problems.

On Thursday June 5, I sold a Covered Call Option on OPK, see details below.
Check out my article on how to use PUTs and CALLs:

Last week, the world market indices were mixed with minor Up/Down movements.  The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and S&P 500 continued to inch up to new all time highs.  Here is an article discussing the jobs recovery that is happening in the U.S.http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/06/06/american-employment-finally-reaches-a-new-record-b.aspx

I originally bought Opko Health (OPK) at $8.35 /share on Feb. 13, 2014 and my goal was to sell it at $12.  After I bought, it went up to $10, then back down to $8.  So when it got back up to $9.20 on Thursday, and I saw the Jan 2015 $12 option selling at $.60, I decided to take some money off the table.

I originally bought American Airlines stock at $2.88 /share on Aug. 14, 2013 when it was in bankruptcy (symbol: AAMRQ) as they emerged from Bankruptcy in 2014, they changed out my shares to the new American Air stock (AAL) at .7 to 1 basis.  Today (June 2) with AAL shares trading at $41, my return on this investment has been great.  So, I sold this Covered Call today at a 10% premium over today’s stock price.
