Investment Idea Sharing for August 17, 2013

This Week's Activity – August 17, 2013:
This week, I have changed the Ultimate Stock finder website from being yellow text on a black background to now be black text on a white background.  I hope you like this new web page layout and find it easier to read.  Next week, you will find 2 new fields in Mutual Fund Evaluator.  We are adding: 10 Year Average Return, and Bond Duration.  10 Year Return will give a longer term view that spans the crash of 2008-09.  Bond Duration is a measure of bond price volatility relative to central bank interest rate changes.  More on this next week.

This week, the Dow ended at 15,081 down from 15,425 last week and almost back down to the July 3 level.  This is the second big rise and fall since May 20, and this week’s drop is the largest weekly drop for all of 2013.

I am still expecting to see a 15% drop in the world markets.  But, I cannot predict when this drop will happen, so while I wait, I will continue to look for companies with good fundamental financial values that are near their 52 week lows.  My goal is to buy good companies whenever they are down.

StockEvaluator “Short List” shows only companies that are within 5% of their 52 week low AND have less than 5 Red cells.  This week 12 companies are on the short list.  None of them look good to me.

Volatility” sort shows only companies that have: Average Daily Price Volatility >3% ;
Within 5% of their 52 week low ; Less than 5 Red cells ; Profit >0% and Dividend >1%.  This week’s list has only 1 company, BTH (Blyth Department Stores).  The Yahoo Finance “Key Statistics” page lists BTH “Profit Margin (ttm)” as 2.7%, but lower on the same web page Yahoo lists “Net Income Avl to Common (ttm)” as -$12.74M.  This negative net income should equate to a negative profit margin, so Yahoo is listing an incorrect value for the Profit Margin.  Always check the values from any website before you actually place a buy order, because I often find mistakes like this.
MutualFundEvaluator “Short List” shows funds that are within 3% of their 52 week low AND have less than 3 Red cells.  This week’s list has 31 funds.  They are all Bond funds, which are continuing to go down in anticipation of The FED raising interest rates.  I am going to wait on making any bond fund buys in hopes they can go even lower.
